Berlin in October: 12 dates, and what closes

Berlin in October 2026 leaves the public baths one outdoor pool you can still swim in, and it shuts at weekends. Their saunas close from 5 to 31 October. Unity Day is a holiday here; the national celebration is in Bremen.

Which means the last outdoor swim of the year at a Berlin public pool has to be taken in your lunch break, in a swimming costume, in October, on a working Tuesday. That is not a figure of speech. The Prinzenbad’s October timetable — which sits in a panel that renders collapsed, easy to scroll straight past — reads 08:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday, and then Samstag: Geschlossen. Sonntag: Geschlossen.

The short version

• Festival of Lights, 9–18 October, free, with a core time of 19:00–23:00. Ten nights, and the one fixture the rest of the month arranges itself around.
• 3 October is a Saturday this year, and a public holiday, so supermarkets shut on a day they would normally open. The national celebration is in Bremen, not Berlin.
• One public outdoor pool survives the month, Monday to Friday only. The Prinzenbad runs 1–30 October, 08:00–16:00, closed both weekend days. Every other Berliner Bäder-Betriebe Sommerbad stopped swimming in September.
• The clocks go back on 25 October. Sunset reads 18:44 on the 1st and 16:39 on the 31st, and the day itself is one hour and fifty-nine minutes shorter by the end of the month.
• No Berliner Bäder-Betriebe sauna is open between 5 and 31 October, which catches out everyone who assumes cold weather means sauna season.

The date that catches everyone out

If you are expecting a huge street party at the Brandenburg Gate on 3 October, there isn’t one this year. The central Day of German Unity celebration rotates with the Bundesrat presidency, and Bremen took over the presidency on 1 November 2025. The Bürgerfest runs in Bremen from 2 to 4 October 2026 under the motto "Viele Stärken – Ein Land".

This is not an inference from an empty listings page. Berlin’s own Senatskanzlei has published a page headed "Berlin zu Gast in der Hansestadt" — Berlin as a guest in the Hanseatic city — describing the stand it is sending to the Ländermeile in Bremen, at Am Osterdeich 64–66, open 16:00 to midnight on the Friday, 10:00 to midnight on the Saturday and 10:00–20:00 on the Sunday. The capital is a guest at its own national holiday.

What that means for a Saturday in Berlin is simpler than it sounds. 3 October is still a statutory public holiday under the Feiertagsgesetz Berlin, so under the Berliner Ladenöffnungsgesetz the shops must close — and because the holiday lands on a Saturday, you lose a shopping day rather than gain a day off. Bakeries may open 07:00–16:00, and pharmacies, petrol stations and shops in passenger stations, airports and coach terminals keep selling. Everything else is Sunday rules. Buy your food on the Friday.

Festival of Lights: the ten nights that make the month

The 22nd Festival of Lights runs from 9 to 18 October 2026 under the motto "Colours of Love". The meta description on the festival’s own 2026 programme page puts the nightly window at 19:00-23:00 Uhr. Admission is free, which is the part people do not believe: this is a free, city-scale art event running for ten consecutive nights.

The programme page lists 31 staged locations, with more promised. Among them: the Brandenburg Gate, the Fernsehturm, the Berliner Dom, the Siegessäule, the Oberbaumbrücke, the Humboldt-Universität, the Staatsoper, St. Hedwig’s Cathedral, the Konzerthaus, the Alte Nationalgalerie, St. Marienkirche, the THF Tower and the Funkturm. Seven of the 31 are in the Nikolaiviertel alone and eight more carry a Potsdamer Platz postcode, which tells you how to plan it: two dense clusters and a string of single landmarks between them. A separate ticketed strand, Festival of Lights in Concert, runs 13–17 October at the Berliner Dom.

Two practical things. The first is that 19:00 is genuinely dark in mid-October — you are not waiting around for dusk the way you would in September. The second is that the walkable core, from the Brandenburg Gate along Unter den Linden to the Dom and the Fernsehturm, is one route of about half an hour on foot, and doing that slowly beats chasing all 31.

The month the water closes

Berlin’s outdoor swimming season does not end with a bang, it ends with a staggered list, and most of that list falls in September. Insulaner, Humboldthain and Pankow are open to 11 September inclusive; Kombibad Gropiusstadt, Sommerbad Neukölln and Strandbad Wannsee stop swimming after 13 September.

One pool is left, and it is not left for the weekend. Sommerbad Kreuzberg — the Prinzenbad — has a published extension running 1 to 30 October 2026 at €7 for an adult. It is the only Berliner Bäder-Betriebe outdoor pool you can swim in during October. But the timetable Berliner Bäder-Betriebe publishes for that exact period runs 08:00 to 16:00 Monday to Friday, and marks Saturday and Sunday Geschlossen. So the last outdoor swim of the year at a Berlin public pool has to be taken on a working day, before four in the afternoon, and on 30 October even that ends.

Strandbad Wannsee is the other trap. It stays "open" until 4 October — weekdays 12:00–18:00, weekends 10:00–18:00, and since 4 October is a Sunday the final day runs 10:00 to 18:00 — but Berliner Bäder-Betriebe lists that whole period explicitly as ohne Badebetrieb, without swimming. Berliner Bäder-Betriebe titles the whole block Sonnenbaden und Sauna: it is a sunbathing and sauna site by then, not a pool. The same pattern holds at the Müggelsee, where Seebad Friedrichshagen runs a Friday-to-Sunday "Goldener Herbst" from 18 September, describing it in its own words as ohne Badebetrieb, with the bar and the grill open and the water off. Indoors it goes the other way. Schwimmhalle Kreuzberg reopens on 3 October, at first only at weekends because the Prinzenbad next door is still running; Schwimmhalle Hüttenweg on 5 October; Stadtbad Märkisches Viertel on 21 October after building work, and that one its own page still calls an expected date rather than a fixed one. Stadtbad Neukölln is the one to watch: its own page says closed until 30 September, but the newer Berliner Bäder-Betriebe announcement says the reopening depends on when the Neukölln outdoor pool shuts and has not been published. Treat 1 October there as provisional. And the saunas — the obvious October answer — are almost entirely shut. Berliner Bäder-Betriebe reopens its saunas on 1 November 2026. Its single exception is the outdoor Strand-Sauna at Wannsee, and that runs only to 4 October. From 5 October to the end of the month the cheap public options in our Berlin sauna guide are locked doors, and only the private spas are running.

An eight-in-the-morning swim on a Tuesday is a hard thing to talk yourself into alone. What changes on 25 October

Clocks go back at 03:00 on Sunday 25 October 2026, the hour repeating as 02:00 CET. It is one hour on paper and it feels like more, because it lands on top of a month that was already losing light fast.

The numbers, from the US Naval Observatory: on 1 October the sun rises at 07:07 and sets at 18:44, giving 11 hours 37 minutes of daylight. On 31 October it rises at 07:01 and sets at 16:39 — 9 hours 38 minutes. The day is one hour and fifty-nine minutes shorter at the end of the month than at the start, and because the clock change takes an hour off the evening in one go, almost all of that loss lands after work rather than before it. Anything you were doing outdoors when you finished for the day — a run, a ride, a walk by the canal — moves to the weekend or moves indoors in the last week of the month.

The 1991–2020 climate normals for Berlin-Tempelhof put October’s average daily high at 14.0 °C and the average low at 6.6 °C, with 43.9 mm of rain and about 3.7 hours of sunshine a day. That is not a washout, but it is a month where the fallback matters: Berlin’s permanently free museums and a longer list of rainy day activities in Berlin are both worth having on your phone before you need them.

Oktoberfest, Jazzfest, and one date you cannot trust

Jazzfest Berlin runs 29 October to 1 November 2026 at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, with sets at A-Trane, Quasimodo and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche. As of early September the programme was due on 10 September and the presale on 17 September, and no regular price categories had been published, so we are not quoting one.

Oktoberfest in Berlin is smaller than visitors expect. The Hofbräu Wirtshaus on Alexanderplatz runs one from 19 September, and here is the thing worth knowing: its own page gives two different end dates — the description says 25 October, the FAQ on the same page says 24 October. Check before you plan the last weekend. Booking is by table for the first three weeks, at €312 for eight people up to €546 for fourteen, each including two Maß per person; from the fourth week two-person seats are sold at €78. Sunday to Thursday take reservations subject to availability; Friday and Saturday are sold as tickets rather than reservations. The larger funfair-style Oktoberfest at the Zentraler Festplatz on Kurt-Schumacher-Damm has no 2026 dates at all — berlin.de’s entry for it reads "Not yet known".

What October does not have

The anti-disappointment list. Several of these were on the shortlist for this article until the dates ruled them out:

• The Berlin Marathon. It is 27 September 2026, and the inline skating marathon is the Saturday before, on 26 September, from 12:20. Both are gone before the month starts.
• A Unity Day street party in Berlin. Bremen has it, 2–4 October.
• The Long Night of Museums. The 2026 edition was 29 August. There is no autumn edition — the organisers are already advertising 28 August 2027.
• Berlin Art Week (9–13 September 2026) and Berlin Science Week (1–10 November 2026). One either side of October, neither in it.
• "Berlin leuchtet", the rival light festival. berlin.de’s archive entry records that it ran each autumn from 2013 to 2020, staged nothing from 2021 to 2023, and announced its dissolution in 2024. Its last edition was in 2020, so any list carrying both light festivals is at least five years out of date.
• Open-air cinema. Freiluftkino Hasenheide’s season finale is 13 September, and neither it nor the Freiluftkino Berlin screens at Kreuzberg, Rehberge and Friedrichshain has an October date scheduled. Our open-air cinema guide is a summer document.
• The Christmas markets. They belong to late November. On this calendar, October sits in the gap between the summer the city has just closed and the markets it has not opened yet.

How we chose these

Twelve dates, not thirty, and each one had to clear the same bar: published by the operator or the responsible authority, dated 2026, and load-bearing — a date that changes what you can actually do that day. A concert listing does not qualify; a pool closing does.

Where a source contradicted itself we said so rather than picking the more convenient number, which is why the Hofbräu end date appears as a warning. Where a 2026 date is not published — the Kurt-Schumacher-Damm Oktoberfest, Stadtbad Neukölln’s reopening, Jazzfest prices — we say so rather than reaching for last year’s.

Looking further ahead, the Christmas market season starts before October is even over — the first opens on 31 October. We checked which Christmas markets in Berlin have published 2026 dates, and which three still have not.

October is the month the evenings close in on a ride home, which is worth reading alongside what it costs to take a bike on the S-Bahn.

October, in one line

It is the last month of the outdoor year, and of the twelve dates above the ten free nights of light art are the ones worth building a week around. One surviving swimming pool that shuts at weekends, a national holiday happening in another city, an hour that disappears on the 25th. The dates are fixed; the only variable is whether you have someone to spend them with.

If you take one thing from this page, take the Prinzenbad line and the 25th. One is the last swim of the year and it happens on a weekday morning; the other is the evening you lose without being asked. Both are easy to miss, and neither comes back until spring.

How we checked

Every date and price here was taken in September 2026 from the operator’s own site or the responsible authority, never from an aggregator or a listings site. The Festival of Lights dates were read in a rendered browser rather than a plain fetch, because the site loads its programme with JavaScript. Where German and English pages disagreed we followed the German page.

Pool dates come from Berliner Bäder-Betriebe’s own announcement of 7 September 2026 and were then cross-checked against each bath’s individual page — which is how both the Stadtbad Neukölln contradiction and the Prinzenbad’s closed weekends turned up. The Prinzenbad’s October timetable sits in a panel that renders collapsed, so it is easy to scroll past even though the text is there.

Rainfall (43.9 mm) and sunshine (115 hours, about 3.7 a day) are DWD’s published 1991–2020 normals for Berlin-Tempelhof. DWD publishes no daily-maximum or daily-minimum normal, so the 14.0 °C and 6.6 °C figures are aggregated from DWD’s own daily station observations for the same station and period; the same aggregation, applied to DWD’s own daily mean column, reproduces its published October mean of 10.2 °C for that station. Sunset times are US Naval Observatory. Anything we could not verify twice was cut.
