Bumble BFF vs MITRA: which app actually helps you meet people in Berlin?

You match with someone on Bumble BFF. You chat. The conversation is fine — same coffee preferences, both love Tempelhofer Feld, both moved to Berlin last year. Three weeks later, you’re still chatting. Then you stop. You never met.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Berlin is full of people stuck in what locals quietly call chat purgatory — apps full of matches that never turn into actual humans you’ve had a beer with.

This is a comparison between two apps trying to fix that: Bumble BFF and MITRA. If you’re looking for a Bumble BFF Alternative in Berlin, MITRA takes a fundamentally different approach. Both want to help you meet people. They go about it very differently.

How Bumble BFF works (2026 version)

Bumble launched a standalone BFF app in 2025, separate from its dating product. The core mechanic is still the same as Bumble’s dating side: swipe.

You see a profile. Swipe right if you’d want to be friends. Swipe left if not. When two people swipe right on each other, you match.

A 24-hour timer starts. Someone has to send the first message before it expires.

Bumble’s 2026 update added Opening Moves — you set a question that anyone who matches with you must answer first (think: “what’s your toxic trait?” or “best brunch spot in Mitte?”). It replaces the awkward blank “hey” opener, and conversations do start better.

After that, you chat. Maybe you exchange voice notes (a 2026 redesign feature). Maybe you make plans. Maybe one of you gets busy. Maybe the chat dies.

Free tier: swipe, match, message. That’s enough to use it.

Paid tier (Bumble Boost): $7.99/week to $24.99/month — unlimited likes, SuperSwipes (signal you really want to match), Spotlight (boost your profile), and 24-hour match extensions.

How MITRA works

MITRA starts from a different question. Not “who do you want to chat with?” — but “what do you want to do this Saturday, and who else wants to do it?”

Here’s how it actually works:

  • You create a profile — name, age, photos, languages you speak, activities you love (we have 163 to pick from, from Tempelhofer Feld jogging to Berlin gallery hopping to weeknight badminton)
  • You post an activity — pick what (say, coffee at Bonanza Kreuzberg), when (Saturday 10am), where (specific spot)
  • Other people see your activity and send a request to join
  • You review their profiles — accept whoever feels right
  • Chat opens between the two of you to confirm details
  • You meet, you do the thing

Afterwards, both of you can leave a review — was the other person on time? Was it a good vibe? This builds an accountability layer that swipe-apps don’t have.

If no activities are happening near you yet, you can also see other people who joined MITRA and suggest an activity directly to them.

Right now MITRA is 1-on-1 only (group activities are coming). And it’s completely free — no paywalls, no Boost, no premium swipes.

The real difference (the one that matters)

Both apps can show you the same person. The difference is what they ask you to do next.

Bumble BFF asks: “do you want to chat with this person?”

MITRA asks: “do you want to grab coffee with this person on Saturday at 10am at Bonanza?”

The first question has no consequences. You can swipe right on 50 people in 10 minutes. Most of those matches will end up in the same chat purgatory.

The second question only works if both people actually mean to show up. Which is uncomfortable in a healthy way — it filters out the “I’ll figure it out later” crowd from the very first interaction.

That’s the design choice. MITRA is harder to use because meeting strangers should be slightly harder than swiping. Otherwise everyone defaults to swiping forever.

When to use Bumble BFF

  • You want a big top-of-funnel — see lots of profiles, take your time
  • You’re new to social apps and want to dip your toe in
  • You enjoy chatting first before committing to anything
  • You’re not in a rush — open to whenever, with whoever

When to use MITRA

  • You moved to Berlin recently and want to actually meet people this week
  • You’re tired of conversations that go nowhere
  • You have a specific thing you want to do (hike, lunch, language exchange, board games) and want someone to do it with
  • You want accountability — both for the people you meet and for yourself

Comparing other apps too?

Bumble BFF isn’t the only app people in Berlin try when they want to meet new people. If NomadTable or Meetup is also on your shortlist, here are similar breakdowns:

Useful side-by-side if you’re evaluating multiple options.

Founder’s honest take

I built MITRA because I had this exact problem when I moved to Berlin. After hours of swiping, I had 10+ Bumble BFF matches in my first month. I met two of them. Both ghosted before the second meeting.

MITRA’s design isn’t the answer for everyone. If you love chatting and don’t mind a lower meet-up rate, Bumble BFF works fine.

But if you want to spend less time typing and more time actually being in a room with other humans — try MITRA.
