The cheapest gyms in Berlin cost between €28.74 and €31.42 a month once joining fees are counted. Basic-Fit Comfort is lowest, then a 24-month McFIT contract at €29.03 and FitX at €31.42. No Berlin chain costs what its website advertises.
The short version:
- Cheapest overall, honestly costed: Basic-Fit Comfort, roughly €28.74 a month in year one. The catch is that Basic-Fit bills every four weeks, so you pay thirteen times a year, not twelve.
- Cheapest without a long lock-in: FitX at €29 a month plus a €29 joining fee — €377 for the first year, €31.42 a month.
- The one that looks cheapest and isn’t: McFIT’s €24.90 headline is a 24-month contract. Add the €39 activation and €15 charged every six months and it is €696.60 over two years.
- The insider detail: in February 2025 a German court ruled that McFIT’s advertised prices were unlawful precisely because they left these fees out. The appeal was rejected in May 2026. If the price on the poster feels too good, that is the reason.
- What it costs: budget €30–€38 a month for a real membership. Anything advertised under €25 has a fee attached somewhere.

Why the advertised price is never the price
In February 2025 the Regional Court of Bamberg ruled against McFIT in a case brought by Germany’s federal consumer organisation. The case number is 1 HK O 27/24.
The finding was narrow and useful. McFIT advertised memberships at €24.90 to €34.90 a month while charging, on top, a one-off €39 activation fee and a €15 “service and training” fee every six months. The court held that the total price for the minimum contract term was missing altogether, and that unavoidable charges have to be built into the advertised monthly rate so people can actually compare one gym with another. McFIT appealed. In May 2026 the Higher Regional Court of Bamberg rejected the appeal.
That ruling is the single most useful thing to know before you sign anything in this city. The number on the window is a marketing number. The number that leaves your account is different, and the gap is usually between €40 and €90 in the first year.
So every figure in the next section is the real one: monthly rate, multiplied by the actual number of payments, plus joining fee, plus any service charge.

Basic-Fit, McFIT and FitX figures come from the operators’ own pricing pages. Clever Fit and JOHN REED are from a German comparison site, not the operator, and are marked with a tilde — treat them as indicative and confirm at the studio.
Two things fall out of that table immediately. First, the spread between the cheapest and the most expensive non-premium option is about €9 a month — less than most people assume, and less than one takeaway. Second, McFIT FLEX at €53.15 a month is the most expensive row on the list, and it is the one aimed at people who don’t want to commit. Flexibility in German gyms is not free; it costs roughly €20 a month.
The genuinely cheapest options
If the only question is price, the answer is not a gym at all.
Free: outdoor calisthenics. Berlin has public pull-up bars, parallel bars and rings in dozens of parks, open around the clock, costing nothing. For a large share of people the honest answer is that this is enough — we mapped the sites and the etiquette in calisthenics in Berlin.
Around €14.90 a month: the small no-contract chains. GYM10 advertises a SUPERFLEX tariff at €14.90 with no minimum term. That figure is from a comparison site rather than the operator, so verify it in person before you count on it. If it holds, it is the cheapest indoor option in the city by a distance.
€29 a month for four sessions: Urban Sports Club Essential. Not a gym membership — a pass that gets you into other people’s gyms, pools, climbing halls and studios. Four check-ins a month, twelve-month term. At €7.25 a visit it beats a gym for anyone who trains once a week and wants variety, and it is the option most newcomers to Berlin end up on. The unlimited Classic tier is €64 a month, or €59 if you pay for the year up front.
Free, if you are a student. Berlin’s universities run Hochschulsport programmes with courses that are free or a few euros a term, and several are open to students of any Berlin university, not only their own. Check with your institution before paying a chain anything.
Three traps that cost you real money
1. Billing every four weeks. Basic-Fit charges per four-week period, not per calendar month. A year has 13 of those, not 12. On the Comfort tier that is one extra €24.99 payment a year that nobody mentions, and it is the single most common surprise on this list.
2. The Servicepauschale. McFIT’s €15 “service and training” fee lands every six months, which is €30 a year on top of the monthly rate. On a 24-month contract that is €60. This exact practice is what the Bamberg court ruled on.
3. The 24-month contract dressed as a discount. The lowest monthly numbers in Berlin are almost always two-year commitments. McFIT’s €24.90 is the cheapest advertised rate in the table and also the longest lock-in. German gym contracts renew automatically unless cancelled in writing within the notice period, and the notice period is typically one to three months before the end of the term. Put the cancellation date in your calendar on the day you sign, not later.

Free and near-free alternatives
Berlin is unusually good at this, which is part of why the gym market here is so price-competitive.
- Outdoor gyms and Trimm-dich trails in most large parks, free, always open.
- Running. Free, and the city is flat. If solo running is the part that fails, the running clubs in Berlin mostly cost nothing to join.

Why going with someone matters more than the price
The cheapest gym in Berlin is the one you actually attend. A €29 membership used four times a year costs €87 a visit. A €40 membership used twice a week costs €3.85.
That is the whole calculation, and it is not really about money. The failure point for almost everyone is the third week in November when it is dark at four in the afternoon and nobody is expecting you. An arrangement with another person fixes that in a way a direct debit never has.
This is the least romantic argument for having a training partner and the most reliable one: you go because someone is standing outside waiting. How we chose these
We included chains with more than one Berlin location and a published price, plus Urban Sports Club because it is what a large share of English-speaking Berliners actually use. Prices come from the operator’s own site wherever one publishes them; where only a comparison site had the figure, the table marks it with a tilde and Sources names the site. We ignored flash sales and introductory offers when calculating the real monthly cost, because they expire and the contract does not — McFIT’s current sale, for example, runs only to 31 August 2026. Premium clubs above €60 a month are outside the scope of a piece about the cheapest options.

Only if you train about once a week. The Essential tier is €29 a month for four check-ins. Beyond that a normal gym membership is cheaper, but Urban Sports Club gets you into pools, climbing halls, yoga studios and classes rather than one building.
Can I use a Berlin gym without a German bank account?
Most chains require a SEPA direct debit, which means an IBAN from a bank in the SEPA area. Several app banks issue one within days. Urban Sports Club accepts card payment, which is why newcomers often start there.
