Cheapest gym in Berlin 2026: what year one really costs
Basic-Fit Comfort is €28.74 a month with all fees, FitX €31.42. Year-one cost of 7 Berlin gym memberships, plus German contract rules. Checked October 2026.
Of the seven memberships we costed, the cheapest gym in Berlin once every fee is counted is Basic-Fit Comfort at €28.74 a month in year one. McFIT’s 24-month contract comes to €30.65 and FitX to €31.42. Germany’s average gym fee is €48.55.
But the price on the website is rarely what leaves your account. Joining fees, half-yearly service charges and four-week billing turn McFIT’s €29.90 into €35.65 a month and Clever Fit Charlottenburg’s €44.90 into €58.62. The table below folds all of it in.

Regular prices from each operator’s own page, without promotions; several chains run short autumn deals, and those end while the contract does not. Basic-Fit’s current offer of four free weeks, until 5 November, comes with a 57-week minimum term. What the cheapest gyms in Berlin leave out of the headline price
In February 2025 the Regional Court of Bamberg (case 1 HK O 27/24) ruled, in a case brought by Germany’s federal consumer organisation vzbv, that McFIT’s price display was misleading because the advertised monthly rates left out the €39 joining fee and the €15 charged every six months. The Higher Regional Court of Bamberg rejected McFIT’s appeal on 20 May 2026. The table above puts everything you pay into one number.
- Four-week billing. Basic-Fit and Clever Fit Charlottenburg charge per four weeks. A year has 13 of those, so Basic-Fit Comfort’s “€24.99” is really 13 payments of €24.99.
- The service fee. McFIT and JOHN REED add €15 every six months, €30 a year. At Clever Fit Charlottenburg it is €29.90 every six months.

Going with someone
The cheapest gym is the one you actually use. A FitX year at €377 works out at €3.63 a visit if you go twice a week, and €94.25 a visit if you only go four times all year. The weeks that decide it are the dark ones in November and January, when it is easiest to stay home.
A fixed time with another person changes that. If someone is waiting at 18:30 on Tuesday, you go. One FitX membership opens all its studios, so two people on FitX can meet at whichever branch suits them both.
Which one we would pick
For most people we would pick FitX. It costs €2.68 a month more than Basic-Fit Comfort, but there is no four-week trick and no service fee, the contract is 12 months and then cancellable monthly, and one membership opens all 114 FitX studios. Basic-Fit Comfort is the right call if the lowest number is all that matters and you are sure about a year. We would skip McFIT’s 24-month tariff: it saves €5 a month in year one against the 12-month one, not worth a second year of commitment.
Price for two: two FitX memberships come to €754 in year one, two Basic-Fit Comfort memberships to €689.72.
Gym fees in Germany: what is normal
The German fitness trade body DSSV puts the average monthly membership fee at €48.55 gross in its 2026 key figures, €40.54 at chains and €59.24 at single studios, across 12.36 million members and 9,647 facilities. So the cheapest membership we costed, at €28.74 all in, is €19.81 a month below the national average.
The contract rules are national too. Under §309 No. 9 of the German Civil Code (BGB), a consumer contract can bind you for at most two years. For contracts signed since 1 March 2022, the notice period before the end of the term can be at most one month, and once the minimum term is over, a contract that renews automatically runs indefinitely and can be cancelled at any time with at most one month’s notice. Since 1 July 2022, §312k BGB requires gyms that sell memberships on their website to offer a cancellation button there, labelled “Verträge hier kündigen” or something just as clear.
Put the end of your minimum term in your calendar on the day you sign. After that date you are free to leave with a month’s notice.
Cheaper or more flexible than a gym

Running, free. The running clubs in Berlin list which groups cost nothing to join.
Urban Sports Club. Not a gym but a pass into many studios, pools and climbing halls. Essential gives 8 check-ins a month for €39 on the 12-month plan, which is €4.88 a visit if you use all eight; Classic, one check-in a day, is €64. Paid monthly without the annual plan, Urban Sports Club says you pay €72 a year more for Essential. On price alone Essential costs more than FitX or Basic-Fit Comfort; it is worth it for variety, not savings.

How do I cancel a gym contract in Germany?
The minimum term can be at most two years. For contracts signed since 1 March 2022, notice before its end can be at most one month, and after the minimum term an automatically renewed contract can be cancelled at any time with at most one month’s notice. Gyms that sell memberships online must offer a cancellation button on their website.
Is Urban Sports Club cheaper than a gym?
Not on price. Essential is €39 a month on a 12-month plan for 8 check-ins, €4.88 a visit if you use all eight, which is more than FitX at €31.42 a month or Basic-Fit Comfort at €28.74. It pays off for variety: studios, pools and climbing halls on one pass.
