Opera in Berlin this winter starts at €9 for a full-price seat: Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in late November, so €18 for two. La Bohème starts at €10 and Hänsel und Gretel at €12 for adults.

But the same opera can cost 35% more on a holiday: the Staatsoper’s top seat for La Bohème is €100 on 10 December and €135 on Christmas Day. And at the Deutsche Oper, prices rise as seats sell.

Berlin has three major opera houses: the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Komische Oper, which plays at the Schillertheater while its own house is renovated. Official prices, checked on 24 October 2026; the Deutsche Oper shows “from” prices only.

Two people talk in red velvet seats during the interval at an opera house

The date sets the price more than the house does

At the Staatsoper, La Bohème runs €10–100 on 10, 16 and 23 December, €11–115 on Fridays and Saturdays, and €12–135 on 25 and 27 December. At the Komische Oper, Orpheus in the Underworld is €12–79 on 23 December, €14–110 on most nights and €40–160 on New Year’s Eve.

The Deutsche Oper goes further: it uses dynamic pricing, so its published prices are “from” prices that rise with demand and the closer you book. Its prices reward booking early.

Some dates are already gone. On 24 October the Staatsoper’s Nabucco was sold out on 14 and 20 December, with only €260 seats left on 17 December and €225 seats on 22 December.

Going with someone

Opera in Berlin works well for two people who are still getting to know each other. You sit side by side for an hour, and then the interval hands you something to talk about: the staging, the soprano, whether either of you followed the plot.

What two seats cost on the cheapest nights, by our count from the official prices:

EveningTwo seats
L’incoronazione di Poppea, Staatsoper, 20 Nov€18 (2 × €9)
La Bohème, Staatsoper, Thu 10 Dec€20 (2 × €10), €24 online
Hänsel und Gretel, Komische Oper, Tue 15 Dec€24 (2 × €12)
Hänsel und Gretel, Deutsche Oper, Wed 23 Decfrom €46 for two adults; from €33 for an adult and a child under 18

The Staatsoper adds a €2 system fee per ticket online. At the Komische Oper, a ClassicCard holder can bring a companion who is also under 30 for the card price plus €5, so two last-minute seats cost €31.

Which house for which evening

Staatsoper Unter den Linden: the grand night out

Its Christmas operas are La Bohème (about 2 hours 25 minutes, one interval) and Everding’s Zauberflöte (about 3 hours, one interval). We would book La Bohème on Thursday 10 December: €10 to €100, the short evening, and you still get the Christmas Eve act.

Deutsche Oper Berlin: Hänsel und Gretel with children

The big modern house in Charlottenburg is the one for families: its Hänsel und Gretel (2 hours 15 minutes) costs €10 for everyone up to 18 this winter. It also has La bohème, La traviata and Die Entführung aus dem Serail in December. Book early: its prices rise as seats sell.

Komische Oper: the most fun

Barrie Kosky’s Orpheus in the Underworld is Offenbach’s operetta played for laughs, 2 hours 45 minutes. Dagmar Manzel’s Hänsel und Gretel is sung in German. The company plays at the Schillertheater on Bismarckstraße until its own house reopens. We would skip the New Year’s Eve Orpheus at €40–160 and take 23 December at €12–79.

Surtitles, dress code and getting there

The Staatsoper shows German and English surtitles in its main hall, though it notes some productions may differ; the Deutsche Oper lists German and English surtitles for every production in our table. We could not find the surtitle languages for the Komische Oper’s Schillertheater shows on its site, so ask the box office before you book.

There is no formal dress code: the Staatsoper says so and only asks you to skip beach and sportswear, and the Komische Oper tells visitors not to worry about one.

  • Staatsoper: Unter den Linden 7. U-Bahn Unter den Linden (U5, U6) or Museumsinsel (U5); S+U Friedrichstraße.
  • Deutsche Oper: Bismarckstraße 35. U2 Deutsche Oper, or Bismarckstraße (U2, U7), which is step-free.
  • Komische Oper at the Schillertheater: Bismarckstraße 110. U2 Ernst-Reuter-Platz or Deutsche Oper; Bismarckstraße has a lift.
