New Year’s Eve in Berlin: free outside, €44.90 inside
The Brandenburg Gate party is planned and free for 2026. Six Berlin venues publish a 31 December price, €44.90 to €539.90. Ban zones are not announced yet.
New Year’s Eve in Berlin is already half-decided, and it is only October. The Brandenburg Gate party is planned, free and outdoors. Six venues publish a 31 December 2026 price — €44.90 to €539.90. The firework ban zones are not announced.
The short version
- The Gate party is on. On 16 September 2026 the Senate Chancellery said Berlin plans to hold its free open-air party at the Brandenburg Gate again, with fireworks and DJs, and that Kulturprojekte Berlin is to be commissioned to run it.
- Berlin’s own events page has not caught up. It still says it is not known whether the event will happen. That page was last updated on 13 May 2026, four months before the confirmation.
- No ban zones have been announced for this New Year. Any guide naming specific streets is printing last season’s map. The police page is still headed “Silvester 2025”.
- Six of the nine venues we checked publish a price for 31 December 2026 — from €44.90 to €539.90, both ends of that range at the Friedrichstadt-Palast. The other three publish no price for the night.
- Fireworks go on sale three days a year. 29, 30 and 31 December, and no earlier this season.
What New Year’s Eve in Berlin costs indoors
We checked nine Berlin venues a visitor might reasonably expect to be selling something for the night. Six have a price on their own site today, though one of them hides it. The other three list nothing specific to the 31st. The last column is the one nobody else publishes, and in October it is the useful one. For the weeks before, see Berlin events in December 2026.
| Venue | What you get | 31 Dec 2026 price | Published on their own site? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friedrichstadt-Palast | BLINDED by DELIGHT, 19:30, seat only | €44.90 – €539.90, 12 tiers | Yes, official webshop |
| Hofbräu Wirtshaus | Buffet, drinks flat rate, band, 18:00–02:00 | €139.00 + 4.99% fee | Yes, in its official ticket shop |
| STERN+KREIS Schiffahrt | Spree boat, Treptow, 20:00–01:30, drinks, DJ | from €149.00 | Yes |
| Sphere Tim Raue, Fernsehturm | Lift up, five courses, deck open to 01:00 | €390.00 all-in | Yes |
| Wintergarten Varieté | Silvestergala, four courses, runs to 03:00 | €208.50 – €258.50 | Only in its webshop — the event page carries no price |
| Berliner Philharmoniker | Silvesterkonzert, 31 Dec, 17:30, Großer Saal | €113 – €340 | Yes, on its own calendar |
| Panoramapunkt | Observation deck | None advertised | No 31 Dec product listed; standard admission is €9.00 |
| Reederei Riedel | Spree boats | None advertised | Publishes a €21.90 Spreefahrt, but its booking engine shows no December 2026 availability |
| BWSG | Spree boats | None advertised | No 31 Dec sailing listed; published season ends 1 November 2026 |
The spread is the thing to notice: the cheapest verified seat and the dearest differ by a factor of twelve, on the same night, in the same city, and both of them are in the Friedrichstadt-Palast. It is also the only one of the nine selling a two-figure ticket for the night itself. If it is the view you are paying €390 for rather than the five courses, there are cheaper ways to get above Berlin.
Six prices, and none of them is a plan. A ticket is the easy half. On MITRA you can post the night you are going — the 19:30 show, the boat, or just the walk down Unter den Linden — and someone looking for the same evening can join you. You approve who comes. The Gate party is on, and Berlin’s own website says otherwise
On 16 September 2026 the Senate Chancellery told the Berliner Kurier it had confirmed that Berlin will again hold its free open-air New Year party at the Brandenburg Gate, with fireworks and DJs. Reporting the same briefing, t-online puts it more cautiously: the Senate plans the party, free entry and fireworks are envisaged, and Kulturprojekte Berlin is to be commissioned. We would treat it as happening and nothing about it as fixed.
Meanwhile berlin.de’s own entry for the event still says it is not yet known whether it will take place, under a footer reading “Aktualisierung: 13. Mai 2026” — four months older than the confirmation. If you searched this last week and came away thinking Berlin had cancelled its New Year, that page is why.
Still unknown: tickets or registration, capacity, opening time, line-up. Last year the organiser planned free online tickets for around 20,000 guests; the Senate has not said it will repeat that, and we would not plan around a ticket nobody has announced. One point for sofa viewers: ZDF moved its New Year show out of Berlin a season ago, and reporting says it is dropping the show altogether in favour of a “Quiz-Champion” special.
Nobody can tell you where you may light a firework yet
Every English-language guide to this right now is describing last winter. We could not find a single 2026/27 ban zone published anywhere, and the clearest evidence is the Berlin police’s own New Year page: it is still headed “Silvester 2025”. Last season the district orders were signed on 9 December in Neukölln and announced on 12 December in Lichtenberg, and the police zones followed later in the month.
Last season, clearly labelled as last season. The Polizei Berlin declared four pyrotechnics prohibition zones for 2025/26: Alexanderplatz, the Steinmetzkiez in Schöneberg, part of Sonnenallee in Neukölln, and the Admiralbrücke in Kreuzberg. Inside them only category F1 items were allowed. A separate weapons and knife ban covered the Brandenburg Gate, the Straße des 17. Juni, the Großer Stern and the Großer Tiergarten. All of it ran from 18:00 on 31 December to 06:00 on 1 January.
If you have read that Pallasstraße, the Schillerkiez or Hermannplatz were ban zones, we could not confirm any of them in an official source for 2025/26. We have left them out rather than repeat them.
The rule the police page itself compresses
Federal law — paragraph 23 of the First Ordinance to the Explosives Act — allows anyone aged 18 or over to set off category F2 fireworks on 31 December and 1 January, with no time of day attached. The Polizei Berlin page states flatly that private fireworks are permitted “ausschließlich” from 18:00 on the 31st to 07:00 on the 1st.
Both are accurate about different things. The 18:00 to 07:00 window comes from district orders, and in Neukölln’s decree it applies only to F2 items whose effect is a bang — Böller — not to rockets or fountains. Lichtenberg issued the same structure. The police communicate the strictest version to everyone. In practice, treat 18:00 to 07:00 as the window, because that is what gets enforced — but a guide telling you all Berlin fireworks are banned outside it is not describing the orders.
- Sale: 29, 30 and 31 December only. If one of those is a Sunday, sale starts on the 28th. In 2026 they are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, so the window is the 29th to the 31st.
- Age: F2 may only be sold to, and set off by, people aged 18 or over.
- Always banned, everywhere: near churches, hospitals, children’s and retirement homes, and particularly fire-sensitive buildings — Berlin’s decrees name petrol stations as the example.
- Fines: up to €50,000 for setting off fireworks outside the permitted period.
- Blank-firing guns: carrying or firing one in public without a Kleiner Waffenschein is a criminal offence carrying a fine or up to three years; even with the permit, firing one in public is an administrative offence with a fine of up to €10,000.

Getting home is the part people plan last
BVG has not published its arrangements for 31 December 2026 — last year’s came out on 23 December, so expect this year’s in the same week. Last season is a fair guide to the shape, and it was generous: the U-Bahn ran right through the night, every five minutes until about 17:00 — every line except the U4 — and every ten after.
Three details from last season catch people out. The U5 did not stop at Brandenburger Tor from 16:00, and from 22:00 until about 00:30 ran only between Alexanderplatz and Hönow. Trams avoided Alexanderplatz from roughly 16:30 to 02:00. And BVG warned that individual entrances, and in some cases whole stations, between Hauptbahnhof and Alexanderplatz could close during the evening at the police’s discretion. If your plan depends on reaching the Gate by U-Bahn, that is the plan that fails.
Travel is not free — we found no announcement of free New Year travel in any recent season, and BVG’s own release does not mention it. A Berlin AB single is €4.00 today and the 24-hour ticket €11.20, the better buy from the third journey on. German fares commonly change on 1 January.
The Gate at midnight is better with someone to lose in the crowd and find again. MITRA is for the specific evening rather than the general intention: pick the night, say where you will be standing, and someone who wants the same thing can come along. What we would skip
Taking a venue’s event page as the price. The Wintergarten’s Silvestergala page gives a four-course menu and a running order down to the minute, and no price at all. The figure only appears if you click through to its own webshop, where the same night runs €208.50 to €258.50. Click through before you decide anything is unpriced. Worth knowing before you plan the evening around it: the gala page gives a 20:00 start and the shop page for the same booking gives 21:00. We would ring to settle it.
Buying a Brandenburg Gate ticket from anyone right now. Nothing has been announced. Any site selling you entry to the official free party today is selling you something the organiser has not created yet.
Bringing fireworks into the centre. The Gate area was not one of last season’s four pyrotechnics zones, but it did carry a weapons and knife ban that included kitchen knives. Assume the centre gets restricted.
Doing it with someone you have not met yet
New Year is the hardest night of the Berlin year to be new here: everyone else appears to have had a plan since October, and the night you most want company is the night nobody is free.
The practical version is smaller than it sounds. Pick one fixed thing — the 19:30 show, the boat from Treptow, a spot on the Straße des 17. Juni at eleven — and make that the invitation rather than the whole evening. One of you books, you meet at a U-Bahn exit an hour before, and you have the thing itself to talk about afterwards instead of having to be interesting from a standing start. If it goes well you are at midnight together; if not, it ends when the thing ends. It helps that making friends in Berlin is genuinely easier on this night than on any other: strangers talk on New Year in a way they will not again until May.
Is the Brandenburg Gate New Year’s Eve party happening in 2026?
It is planned. On 16 September 2026 the Senate Chancellery said Berlin will again hold a free open-air party with fireworks and DJs, and that Kulturprojekte Berlin is to be commissioned to run it. Berlin’s own events page still says it is not known whether it will take place, but that page was last updated on 13 May 2026, four months earlier.
Do I need a ticket for the Brandenburg Gate party?
Not announced yet. Last season the organiser offered free online tickets for around 20,000 guests, but the Senate has not said it will repeat that for 2026. Nobody is in a position to sell you entry today.
Where are the firework ban zones in Berlin this year?
They have not been announced. As of 9 October 2026 the Berlin police New Year page is still headed Silvester 2025. Last season’s four zones were Alexanderplatz, the Steinmetzkiez in Schöneberg, part of Sonnenallee in Neukölln, and the Admiralbrücke in Kreuzberg. Last season the district orders came on 9 and 12 December and the police zones later in the month, so expect this year’s through December.
When can you buy and let off fireworks in Berlin?
Category F2 fireworks may only be sold to the public on 29, 30 and 31 December. Federal law allows people aged 18 or over to set them off on 31 December and 1 January. Several Berlin districts, including Neukölln and Lichtenberg, additionally limit bang-only Böller to roughly 18:00 to 07:00, and the Berlin police communicate that window for all private fireworks. Fines run to 50,000 euros.
What does a New Year’s Eve ticket cost in Berlin?
Of the nine venues we checked, six publish a price for 31 December 2026. The Friedrichstadt-Palast sells its 19:30 show from 44.90 to 539.90 euros across 12 tiers, the Berliner Philharmoniker Silvesterkonzert runs 113 to 340 euros, the Wintergarten Varieté Silvestergala runs 208.50 to 258.50 euros in its own webshop, the Hofbräu Wirtshaus charges 139 euros plus a 4.99 percent fee per order, a STERN+KREIS boat from Hafen Treptow starts at 149 euros, and dinner at Sphere Tim Raue in the Fernsehturm is 390 euros. The other three publish no price for the night.
Does the U-Bahn run all night on New Year’s Eve in Berlin?
Last season it did, and BVG has not yet published its plan for 2026. In 2025/26 the U-Bahn ran through the night, but the U5 did not stop at Brandenburger Tor from 16:00 and trams avoided Alexanderplatz from about 16:30 to 02:00. Travel is not free. A Berlin AB single is 4.00 euros today and a 24-hour ticket is 11.20 euros.

So what would we actually do
Wait. That is the honest answer in October. The one near-settled thing is the one that costs nothing: the Gate party is planned and free, and private fireworks happen across the city whatever else does. Everything that would make you spend money — the ban zones, the transport plan, the Gate ticketing if there is any — lands in December, most of it in the final ten days.
If you want a seat indoors, the Friedrichstadt-Palast at €44.90 is the only two-figure ticket of the nine for the 31st, and it is on sale now. If you want the street, you need do nothing yet except decide who you are standing next to. That is the part of New Year’s Eve in Berlin worth sorting early, and the only part nobody will announce for you.
Midnight is eighty-three days away, which is enough time to not spend it alone. Post the thing you want to do on the 31st and let someone join — MITRA is built for one evening at a time, and you decide who comes. Get MITRA on Google Play · Download on the App Store
