German classes in Berlin: €1,603 for 700 lessons

German classes in Berlin run €0.80 to €13.69 per 45 minutes — the cheapest monthly price is not the cheapest teaching. Six providers, checked September 2026.

German classes in Berlin are priced by the month but taught in 45-minute units. A subsidised integration course is €1,603 for 700 units; speakeasy’s €219 evening course is €13.69 a unit, and Kapitel Zwei’s €319 intensive €4.98.

The cheapest teaching in this guide is on none of the price lists you have open. Berlin’s adult education centres cap their German courses up to B1 at between €0.80 and €2.98 a unit — but the classroom courses cannot be booked online, and VHS Mitte registers in person only, at a counter on Antonstraße that opens three times a week.

What German classes in Berlin cost per 45 minutes

Fees are quoted per month; teaching is measured in Unterrichtseinheiten, units of 45 minutes. Every figure in the right-hand column is the provider’s own published price divided by its own published unit count.

€219 a month buys a quarter of what €319 buys

speakeasy’s evening course is €219 a month, and it is the figure people on a budget reach for. Its own page states the format: twice a week, 90 minutes, four teaching units a week, 16 a month.

Kapitel Zwei’s classroom intensive is €319 for four weeks and 64 units. So the course that costs €100 less a month delivers exactly a quarter of the teaching — €13.69 a unit against €4.98, nearly three times as much per unit. speakeasy’s own pages put a level at about four months at that pace; its intensive course splits each level into two four-week parts.

The €219 course is not a cheaper course, then. It is a smaller one, spread thinner, and it takes roughly twice as long to finish a level. Sprachenatelier runs the identical format — four units a week — at €125 for four weeks, which is €7.81 a unit, a little over half speakeasy’s rate.

€1,603 for 700 lessons, if you can get a place

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees sets the standard participant contribution for an integration course at €2.29 per teaching hour. Its own worked example: a general course of 700 teaching hours costs €1,603. That is 600 hours of language plus a 100-hour orientation course, and it ends with the DTZ exam.

No other package here buys 700 units at anything like that price. At Hartnackschule in Schöneberg, which runs these courses, the same modules cost €458 each — €4.58 a unit, or €3,206 for the full 700 — if you attend without a certificate of eligibility. With a certificate from the Jobcenter, the course is free. With one from the Ausländerbehörde, you pay the €229 module rate.

Two details are worth more than the headline rate. First, an exemption from the contribution is possible on application — for people receiving basic income support, unemployment benefit or social assistance, for anyone otherwise financially in need, and for employees below a gross monthly threshold. Second, and this is the trap: the application must be in before the course starts. A backdated exemption is granted only for your individually first module. For later modules it applies only from the course section following the application, so a late form costs a full 100 units at full price. Pass the final test within two years of your first authorisation and half the contribution you did pay comes back, again on application.

The catch is access. Berlin’s adult education centres state that their classroom German and integration courses require a consultation first. VHS Mitte takes registrations in person only, at Antonstraße 37 by Leopoldplatz, on Mondays 11–14, Tuesdays 14–17 and Thursdays 11–14; you can turn up without an appointment, but expect to wait. Bring a passport, any BAMF, Ausländerbehörde or Jobcenter authorisation, and a benefits approval notice if you have one. There is no online booking for the classroom courses — VHS Mitte’s separate online and blended-learning German courses register through vhs.cloud instead. Hartnackschule’s integration courses are in person only, with no online option at all, which is worth knowing before you plan your first weeks in Berlin around a timetable.

Berlin changed the VHS rules on 1 August 2026

Most guides quote €2.76 per unit for a VHS course. That number comes from the fee regulation of July 2023 and has been superseded. Berlin’s current regulation for its adult education centres came into force on 1 August 2026 and sets the base value at €3.20 per 45-minute unit, with each course priced between 50% and 250% of it.

German is treated separately. Under clause 6(3), a fee-paying German course must charge at least 25% of the base value — €0.80 — and at most 130% of the BAMF integration-course contribution, a ceiling of just under €2.98. The individual 50% reductions elsewhere in the regulation do not apply to that capped fee.

Clause 6(4) is the new part, and it is the one to know: the cap runs only up to and including B1. Above B1, a German course reverts to the ordinary scale — €1.60 to €8.00 a unit — and the 50% reductions come back with it. The cheapest teaching in this guide can therefore get substantially dearer per hour the moment you pass B1, at the same institution, under the same rulebook.

One honest caveat: a transitional clause lets any Volkshochschule charge the old 2023 fees for the autumn 2026 semester. So this term you may still be quoted on the €2.76 base. Ask which regulation your course is priced under.

The same €319 buys a third less online

Kapitel Zwei charges €319 for its four-week intensive course, and €319 for the online version. They are not the same size. The school’s own comparison lists 16 units a week in the classroom — four 45-minute units a day, Monday to Thursday, in three-hour slots — against about 11 a week online, where the slots are two hours. Its telc preparation pages put the identical contrast in hours: 48 for the classroom intensive, 32 online, both at €319.

That is a third of the course removed for the same money, taking the online rate to roughly €7.25 a unit against €4.98 in the room. Class sizes differ — 5 to 12 in person, a maximum of nine online — so there is a case for the smaller group, but make it knowingly.

Zero to B1, costed six ways

B1 is the level most paperwork asks for, and it is where a course plan should be costed to. Each row is the provider’s own published package price for A1, A2 and B1 end to end.

Read the middle four rows together. They land within €205 of each other — and they buy 384, 384, 360 and 192 units: roughly the same spend, and twice as much teaching at one end as at the other. Widen it to the whole table and the gap is wider still: €1,603 buys 700 units, €1,999 buys 192.

Six months of classes and still nobody to practise with is the normal outcome, not a personal failure. On MITRA you post the thing you want to do and approve whoever asks to come — one person or a group. Get MITRA on Google Play · Download on the App Store

Where this breaks

Course fees are not the whole bill, and the extras are not evenly spread.

  • Registration. Sprachenatelier charges a one-off €50 for on-site courses, which turns its first four weeks into €6.81 a unit rather than €6.11. Kapitel Zwei, speakeasy and die deutSCHule’s standard contract all charge nothing.
  • Visa paperwork. speakeasy charges €50 for an official enrolment document for visa purposes and €5 for a plain letter. Kapitel Zwei charges €20 for a registration confirmation. die deutSCHule charges €30 to register on a visa contract against nothing on the standard one — and its visa-contract course fees are higher too: €2,039 for 24 weeks against €1,839.
  • Books. €20–€30 at Kapitel Zwei; €27.50 a set at speakeasy for A1.1 to B1.2 and €25.00 for B2.1 to C1.2.
  • The exam. telc B1 is €205 at Kapitel Zwei and €190 at Sprachenatelier for its own students, €210 for outsiders. die deutSCHule’s own Zertifikat Deutsch is €118 internally and €149 externally.
  • Discounts you may assume exist. Sprachenatelier states outright that its student and unemployed reductions do not apply to German courses or private lessons. Berlin’s VHS regulation likewise disapplies its 50% reduction to capped German fees up to B1 — though the reduction does apply above B1.
  • December. Kapitel Zwei’s December courses run three weeks, Monday to Friday, rather than four weeks Monday to Thursday. Check the unit count before assuming a month is a month.

If you cannot commit €300 a month

There is a middle tier that costs a fraction of an intensive course and is rarely listed. die deutSCHule’s Blue Monday is a 90-minute speaking session, two units a week at €36 for four weeks or €70 for eight — €4.50 and €4.38 a unit, cheaper per unit than its own intensive course. It runs at all levels from A1 to C1, and the school says it can be booked on its own or added to an intensive course. Kapitel Zwei runs grammar, conversation and pronunciation courses at €82 for four weeks, one three-hour session a week; a 60-minute trial lesson there is €52.

Then there is the part no course sells. Speaking happens outside the classroom or it does not happen — which is why a language exchange partner in Berlin is worth as much as a second course, and costs nothing. If your German is not there yet, plenty of the city runs in English anyway; we have a guide to making friends in Berlin without German, and one on free things to do in Berlin for the months when the course fee has eaten the budget.

Pick one thing from your week — a walk, a coffee, a film — set a time, post it. It takes about forty seconds, and it is the part of learning German that no fee covers. Get MITRA on Google Play · Download on the App Store

What is the cheapest German course in Berlin?

By cost per 45-minute unit, the subsidised integration course at €2.29, and a Berlin VHS German course up to B1, which is capped at just under €2.98 a unit. Among the private schools here, die deutSCHule’s Blue Monday is €70 for eight weeks at €4.38 a unit, and its intensive course is €318 for four weeks at €4.97.

How much does a German course in Berlin cost per month?

The group intensive courses in this guide run €299 to €440 for four weeks: Kapitel Zwei €299 to €319, die deutSCHule €318, speakeasy €359, Sprachenatelier €440. Evening courses are cheaper per month — €125 at Sprachenatelier, €219 at speakeasy — but far dearer per teaching hour, because they deliver only four units a week.

How much is the integration course in Germany?

€2.29 per teaching hour is the standard contribution. BAMF’s own example is a general course of 700 teaching hours for €1,603, payable in blocks of 100 hours. With a Jobcenter certificate of eligibility it is free, and an exemption can be applied for on other grounds — but apply before the course starts. Without any certificate you self-fund: Hartnackschule charges €458 per 100-hour module, so €3,206 for the full course.

Can I book a VHS German course online in Berlin?

Not the classroom German and integration courses. Berlin’s adult education centres say registration for those follows a personal consultation and placement, and VHS Mitte registers in person only, at Antonstraße 37 near Leopoldplatz. Its online and blended-learning German courses register through vhs.cloud, and VHS Mitte lists a short set of add-ons — exam preparation, conversation, grammar, pronunciation — bookable online without advice.

Is an online German course cheaper than a classroom one?

Not necessarily, and at Kapitel Zwei it is dearer per hour. The four-week intensive costs €319 either way, but the classroom version is 16 units a week and the online version about 11 — the school’s telc pages put it as 48 hours against 32. Sprachenatelier does discount online: its evening course is €115 for four weeks against €125 on site.

How long does it take to reach B1 in Berlin?

On an intensive course, about six months. Kapitel Zwei splits each level into two four-week parts, and die deutSCHule schedules A1, A2 and B1 as eight weeks per level, or 24 weeks in total. On a twice-weekly evening course speakeasy puts a single level at around four months, so roughly a year to B1.

Want to keep reading?

The honest summary: if you can get a certificate of eligibility, the integration course is the best value of the routes costed here, and the queue at Antonstraße is the price of it. If you cannot, the gap between the good private German classes in Berlin is small — a few hundred euros across six months — so pick on timetable, district and class size rather than on price, and check the unit count before you believe a discount.

How we checked

Every price and unit count here comes from the provider’s own site or the responsible authority, read on 16 September 2026 — no aggregators. Where fees and formats sit on separate pages, both were read and reconciled. The VHS figures come from the fee regulation itself, which is how the 1 August 2026 change surfaced.
