Crochet in Berlin: free groups, knit nights, first classes
At least four Berlin libraries run free weekly crochet and knitting groups; first classes with yarn cost €45–€50, knit nights €12. Checked Oct 2026.
Crochet in Berlin costs nothing but yarn if you start at the library: at least four public libraries run free crochet and knitting groups every week, and a first class with yarn included costs €45 to €50.
The catch: a class teaches you the stitch, not the people. A University of Kansas study put the step from acquaintance to casual friend at roughly 50 hours together, so how often a group meets matters more than what it costs.

If yarn is not your thing, the same weekly-table logic works at book clubs in Berlin and board game cafés.
A weekly group gets you to 50 hours; a one-off class does not
Communication researcher Jeffrey Hall surveyed 355 adults who had moved in the previous six months, and 112 first-year students. His estimate: about 50 hours together to go from acquaintance to casual friend, about 90 to become friends, and more than 200 for a close friend. Time spent socialising counted; time spent working together counted for less.
Our arithmetic from that: a group that meets for two hours once a week takes about 25 weeks to reach 50 hours. The Ingeborg-Bachmann-Bibliothek runs three two-hour sessions a week, six hours in total, so going to all three gets you there in about nine weeks. A 90-minute workshop is 1.5 hours.
Treat it as a rough yardstick. Hall measured time with one person, and a table of eight splits your attention. But the direction is clear: pick the group you can actually attend every week, then add a class if you need the basics.
Going with someone
Crochet is quiet, which is the point. Two people can sit at the same table, each counting stitches, and the conversation comes in the pauses: dropped stitches, wrong colours, whose square looks less like a square. Nobody has to fill the silence, which makes it an easy first plan with someone you met once.
Bring one hook and one ball each, or book the same class: at the Makery two seats cost €100, at Alice im Wolleland €90, and Knit ‘n Bitch is €24 for two with a drink each. The library groups are free to attend; Tiergarten-Süd even provides materials.

Free crochet and knitting groups in Berlin libraries
Berlin’s public libraries are the free way in. The five in the table say they are free or list no fee, and none asks you to book.
- Ingeborg-Bachmann-Bibliothek, Nehringstr. 10, Charlottenburg: three slots a week, beginners welcome. The best choice if you want to put in hours fast.
- Bibliothek am Wasserturm, Prenzlauer Allee 227–228: the Queer Needlecraft Corner, Wednesday evenings, open to all levels.
- Bibliothek Tiergarten-Süd, Lützowstr. 27: “Gemeinsam Häkeln” with materials and starter projects provided; open from age 8, so expect a mixed table.
- Heinrich-Böll-Bibliothek, Greifswalder Str. 87, Prenzlauer Berg: a Strick- und Häkeltreff on 26 Oct, 9 and 23 Nov, 16:30–18:30, run by staff who are beginners themselves. No fee listed.
- Heinrich-Schulz-Bibliothek, Otto-Suhr-Allee 98, Charlottenburg: Thursdays 16:00–19:00, tea and water provided. No fee listed.
Most of these meet in the afternoon. If you work office hours, the realistic ones are the Wasserturm and Ingeborg-Bachmann on Wednesday evenings, or the Heinrich-Schulz-Bibliothek, which runs until 19:00 on Thursdays.
Your first crochet or knitting class
If you are starting crochet in Berlin from zero, a class makes sense if you cannot yet make a chain or cast on, because the library groups expect you to bring something to work on.
- The Makery, learn to crochet a granny square (€50): in English, “no experience required”, yarn, hooks and a take-home guide included. Morning slots only, 10:00–11:30.
- Alice im Wolleland knitting taster (€45): two hours, yarn and needles from the instructor, taught in German with help in English or French. One morning and two early-evening dates.
- Knit Knit (€49 each): a two-hour beginners’ crochet class and a 90-minute New Knitter I knitting class with many dates. The pages are in German and do not say whether materials are included; ask when you book.
- Wollhandel-Berlin headband class (€39, Spandau, 7 Nov): yarn, coffee and pastries included, but you must already know how to cast on, so it is a second class, not a first.
We would start with the Alice im Wolleland taster if you want knitting and the Makery if you want crochet: both include materials; the Makery teaches in English, Alice in German with help in English or French. We would skip the Volkshochschule for now: the autumn beginners’ courses we found started in September, and the spring 2027 programme was not published on 25 October.

Knit nights and paid clubs
- Knit ‘n Bitch at DOCK 11 (€12 with a drink): run by Knit Knit, four hours on a Tuesday evening, explicitly “not a course”. Book in the shop’s online store.
- Herr U: an open crochet and knitting session every Monday (€12, up to nine people, prepaid), and a monthly Saturday meetup, “Aber bitte mit Wolle”, at Breite Str. 50 on 7 Nov, 14:00–16:30 (€15 prepaid, 10 places, with cake, coffee and tea and a €5 voucher on wool bought that day, minimum spend €20).
- ssk and k2tog: an international knit and crochet group on Meetup, beginners welcome, meeting in cafés around the city; you bring your own project and RSVP on Meetup.
