Winter in Berlin: 100+ sunsets before 5pm, and a plan

From 25 October the sun sets before 5pm in Berlin for over 100 days. The loneliness data, the sunset table, and a 12-week plan to spend winter with people.

Winter in Berlin: two friends laughing as they walk down a cobbled street at blue hour, with warm light in the windows behind them.

Winter in Berlin starts properly on Sunday 25 October, when the clocks go back and the sun that set at 17:52 the evening before goes down at 16:50. From then until early February it sets before 5pm on more than 100 days in a row. The time to plan for that is now.

You know the moment, even if you have not lived it here yet. A Tuesday in November. You step out of the office and it is already night. The group chat is quiet. Going home and not coming out again until Saturday is the easiest thing in the world, and on Saturday it is grey too.

Our take, bluntly: the Berlin winter is not a weather problem, it is a calendar problem. The people who get through it well are not the ones with the best coat. They are the ones who put other people in the diary before the dark arrives.

The short version

  • The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, and sunset jumps an hour earlier overnight.
  • The earliest sunset, around 15:52, comes in mid-December. The shortest day has just over seven and a half hours of daylight.
  • Sunset does not get back to 5pm until about 5 February 2027.
  • 42% of 21 to 30-year-olds in Germany feel lonely, and 57% of expats in Germany find it hard to make local friends.
  • Our fix is boring on purpose: one fixed plan with another person every week, booked before 25 October.

How dark winter in Berlin actually gets

We calculated the sunset for Berlin Mitte for every day from the clock change to spring. These are the dates that matter.

The detail people miss is that the earliest sunset is not on the shortest day. It comes about a week before, in mid-December. By the time the Christmas markets close, the evenings are already getting longer.

Why it hits people who moved here harder

The dark would matter less if everyone had a full diary. Plenty of people in their twenties do not. The Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) published new figures in June 2026, from its survey in the winter of 2024/25: 42% of 21 to 30-year-olds in Germany feel lonely, against 31% of 31 to 54-year-olds. One in five in that younger group, 21%, feel strongly lonely.

If you moved here, add the settling-in problem. In InterNations’ Expat Insider 2026 survey, Germany came 30th of 31 countries overall and 28th for ease of settling in. 57% of expats in Germany said making local friends is hard, against 40% worldwide, and only 43% rated locals as friendly, against 63% worldwide.

We looked for a recent Berlin-only loneliness survey and could not find one, so these numbers are national. We doubt Berlin is the exception. If this sounds like your third month, we wrote about why month three in Berlin is the loneliest, and about what to do when you have no friends in Berlin yet.

One more number, because it changes how you plan. The communication researcher Jeffrey Hall found it takes around 50 hours together to turn an acquaintance into a casual friend, and around 90 to become a friend. A three-hour plan every week for twelve weeks is 36 hours. That is most of the way to a casual friendship with one person, before spring.

The 12-week plan, one thing a week

One plan per week, each one indoors or after dark on purpose, each one easier with a second person. The dated events are checked against the organisers’ own sites. The rest are things Berlin does every week of the winter.

Three friends playing a board game around a wooden table in a cosy café on a dark winter evening.

Half the rows have a guide behind them. For the warm weeks, start with the best saunas in Berlin and board game cafés in Berlin. For the bright ones, bouldering for beginners and indoor swimming pools. Quiz nights are in our pub quiz guide, and every market date is in the Christmas markets guide.

The markets start earlier than people think. The earliest opening we found is Lichtenberger Winterzeit on Landsberger Allee, on 31 October, while the rest of the city is still on Halloween.

What we would skip

  • Waiting for a friend group to form by itself. In winter it does not. Nothing is happening in the park to fall into.
  • Gendarmenmarkt on a December Saturday night. It costs €2 and it is packed. Go on a weekday between 11:00 and 14:00, when entry is free (except 24 to 26 and 31 December), and it is a different market.
  • The winter bucket list. Twenty ideas in a notes app lose to one plan with a date, a place and a name next to it.
  • Deciding on the night. After dark in November the sofa always wins. Decide on Sunday, for the whole week.

How to turn the plan into people

Pick one evening and keep it. We like Thursday: far enough from the weekend to feel like a win, close enough that you are not tired from the whole week yet.

Then make every second meeting easy to say yes to. The first time is a plan, the second time is the start of a friendship, and in our experience the second time is where most people drop off. End each evening by naming the next one: same place next week, or the next row on the list.

If you do not speak much German yet, most of this does not need it. We wrote a whole guide on making friends in Berlin without German. And none of the twelve weeks needs a drink either.

We are not doctors. If a low mood stays heavy for weeks, that is a conversation for your GP, not a blog post.
